Conehead Baby Hat

Newborns - at least, those delivered rather than "hatched," as we put it in my family - have pointy heads. All that squeezing... this reminded me of the old Coneheads skit from Saturday Night Live... and so I decided to make a hat for a coneheaded baby. It's an extremely easy pattern, and lots of fun to make.

Finished size: 10in (14in) circumference [25cm (35cm)]
Gauge: 18sts and 30rows to 4in (10cm) in stockinette stitch in the round

Materials:
1 (partial) skein worsted weight yarn (I used Peaches N Creme 100% Cotton)
US7 (4.5mm) needles - whatever you use for knitting small things in the round
Stitch markers: 1 of one color, 5 additional of different color(s)
Yarn needle

Instructions:
Note: Size given is for preemie hat, with newborn hat in parentheses.
Cast on 42 (60) stitches.
Join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist, and place marker.
Knit in stockinette stitch (knit all stitches, all rounds) for 2.5 (3)in [6.25 (7.5)cm] - approx. 18 (22) rows.

Begin crown shaping:
Round 1: (K7 (K10); place marker) 6 times
Round 2: (K to 2 before marker; K2tog) six times
Rounds 3 & 4: K all sts.
Repeat rounds 2-4 until 6 sts remain.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail, and thread through remaining live stitches. Slip stitches from needles and pull tail tight to cinch hole closed.
Sew ends invisibly to inside.
