Baby Bowties Hat

When I saw the "Tiny Bowknot" pattern in Barbara Walker's 2nd Treasury, I just knew I had to make a preemie hat out of it. It's just so cute and delicate, and perfect to spice up an otherwise typical stockinette hat. The stitch itself is easy to remember but uses the possibly novel "knit into the stitch below" (K1B) technique.

Since you have half a prayer of keeping a hat on a baby's head, but very little of getting a tie on a squiggly babe, I chose to rename the pattern "baby bowties" - their heads can be fancy even if their necks aren't!

Finished dimensions: 12in (30cm) circumference by 4.5in (11cm) height (flat)
Gauge: 12 sts by 20 rows in pattern to 2in (5cm) in the round

Materials:
1 (partial) skein Plymouth Dreambaby DK (50% microfiber acrylic; 50% nylon) [50g/1.76oz to 183yds/167m]
US 5 (3.75mm) double pointed needles (or whatever method you use for knitting in the round)
Stitch marker
Yarn needle

Instructions: (note: K1B = Knit in to the stitch below; Sl1 = slip one stitch knitwise; PSSO = Pass Slipped Stitch Over most recent stitch made)
Cast on 72 stitches.
Join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist, and place marker.
Work in garter stitch for two "ridges" = (K one round, P one round) twice

Pattern stitch:
Rows 1, 2, 5, 6: K all sts.
Row 3: (P3; K3) 12 times
Row 4: (P1; K1B; P1; K3) 12 times
Row 7: (K3; P3) 12 times
Row 8: (K3; P1; K1B; P1) 12 times

Work pattern 3 times, then rows 1-4 once more.

Crown shaping:
Round 1: (K9; Sl1; K2tog; PSSO) six times (60 sts rem)
Round 2 and all even rounds: K all sts.
Round 3: (K7; Sl1; K2tog; PSSO) six times (48 sts rem)
Round 5: (K5; Sl1; K2tog; PSSO) six times (36 sts rem)
Round 7: (K3; Sl1; K2tog; PSSO) six times (24 sts rem)
Round 9: (K1; Sl1; K2tog; PSSO) six times (12 sts rem)
Round 11: K2tog six times (6 sts rem)
Cut yarn and thread through remaining six stitches, slipping stitches off the needles. Pull tight to gather hole closed, and sew to inside of hat.

Sew in ends.
